The Department of Biological Sciences functions within the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. Courses and activities in the Fulbright College are focused on motivating and empowering students to develop a global perspective, which fosters creativity, integrity, teamwork, leadership, and ultimately personal and professional success.

The Department of Biological Sciences welcomes new faculty member, Dr. Maribeth Latvis:
Dr. Maribeth Latvis

Dr. Maribeth Latvis holds a Ph.D. in Biology with a specialization in plant systematics from the University of Florida and completed her B.S. in Anthropology/Zoology from the University of Michigan. Prior to her arrival at the University of Arkansas, she was a Postdoctoral Research Scientist at the University of Idaho, followed by several years as an Assistant Professor and Herbarium Director at South Dakota State University. Maribeth serves as the Director of the UARK Herbarium, and her research combines field botany, genomics, bioinformatics, and herbarium study to understand the evolution of plant diversity and its conservation.

The Department of Biological Sciences welcomes new faculty member, Dr. Don Shepard:
DonShepard

Dr. Don Shepard holds a Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Oklahoma, a M.S. in Biology from Illinois State University, and a B.S. in Biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to coming to the University of Arkansas, he was on the Biology faculty at Louisiana Tech University. Dr. Shepard’s research employs molecular methods and geospatial tools to examine patterns of genetic variation within and among species, identify cryptic diversity, and understand the processes that drive ecological and evolutionary diversification of amphibians and reptiles.
