Mission
The mission of the department is to generate and disseminate psychological knowledge and to promote the development of students and the profession through research, teaching, and service.
Letter from the Chair
As one of the largest and most productive departments in Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, we take great pride in providing outstanding learning experiences for over 1000 undergraduate students and for excellence in training for our graduate students in our Ph.D. programs in Clinical Psychology and Experimental Psychology. This pride is well-earned, as faculty members in the department have recently won awards from the University for excellence in teaching, research, and advising.
At the undergraduate level, our popular major provides students with the background to join the workforce immediately or pursue graduate study in psychology and related fields, as well as in business, law, and medicine. At the graduate level, our doctoral programs lead our students to successful and productive careers in academia, clinical practice, and in other professional and applied settings.
Research in the Department covers a wide range of topics and research areas with identifiable strengths in the study of social and cognitive processes and in the study of anxiety disorders. Research activities in the Department are supported by the Howells Fund, a departmental endowment. In addition, faculty and students currently hold or have recently held research and training grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Health Resource Service Administration and other federal, state, and private funding agencies.
