The Walk

Before 1970

Margaret Clark, MA’68, EdD’78, Fayetteville, gave the keynote address at the fall conference of District III of the Arkansas Foreign Language Teachers Association.

Stephen Duke, MS’68, was awarded an honorary doctorate degree by the University of the Basque in Bilbao, Spain on Nov. 26, 2008. The award was given in recognition of his international contributions to plant and agricultural sciences and for his long standing interactions with the university. He received his first Ph.D. from Duke University in 1975, and has since worked for the Agricultural Research Service of USDA. He is research leader of the natural products research unit located in the Thad Cochran Research Center of the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy in Oxford, MS, where his research is focused on natural products for pest management.

1970s

Dr. Henry Miller, BA’72, St. Mary’s City, MD, received the first Maryland Heritage Fellowship Award.

Woody Bassett, BA’74, JD’77, Fayetteville, earned the Wes Gordon Golden Deeds Award.

Susan Harris Stoltz, BA’74, Fort Collins, CO, was appointed to the Board of Advisors at the University of Arkansas.

Larry Foley, BA’76, Fayetteville, presented his new short documentary film, “The Buffalo Flows,” at the Northwest Arkansas Documentary Film Festival.

David Michael Love, BA’76, JD’79, Hot Springs, a Pi Kappa Alpha, is an attorney for In House Legal Counsel IPA.

Walter C. Hudson III, BA’79, Dover, a Pi Kappa Alpha, is the owner of WCH Construction.

1980s

Jonathan D. Mast, BA’87, MA’89, Overland Park, KS, is manager of multi-media relations for Black and Veatch.

James Aaron Woods, BA’87, Broken Arrow, OK, a Pi Kappa Alpha, is vice president/owner of HealthCare Solutions Group, Inc.

Becky Alston, BA’88, Tontitown, was awarded the Bernice Young Jones Award.

Helen Eaton, BSE’86, a teacher at Holcomb Elementary School in Fayetteville, has been named Arkansas English Elementary Teacher of the Year by the Arkansas Council of Teachers of English and Language Arts. Eaton has co-edited two books, Spark the Brain, Ignite the Pen: Quick Writes for Kindergarten Through High School Teachers and Beyond and The Flavor of Our Words. In addition, she has 23 years’ experience in teaching second through fourth grade and has been a Northwest Arkansas Writing Project teacher-consultant for workshops, writing conferences held at the University of Arkansas, and on sites of various school districts for the past 10 years.

1990s

Liz Vanzant, BA’90, Fayetteville, is the outreach coordinator for the Northwest Arkansas Offices of the Alzheimer’s Association.

Dave Dawson, MA’90, Fayetteville, received the Outstanding Advising Award — Administrator from Nacada.

Barbara Shadden, MA’92, Fayetteville, received the 2008 Outstanding Alumni Award from Southern Connecticut State University School of Graduate Studies.

Eric Irvin, BA’93, Seattle, WA, is assistant director of academic programs for health sciences at the University of Washington Educational Outreach.

Dr. Kathleen Condray, BA’94, Fayetteville, attended the 2008 American Council of the Teaching of Foreign Languages Convention and World Languages Expo.

Kelly Ann Smakal, BA’94, JD’96, Tulsa, OK, is a partner at Smakal Munn, P.C. in Tulsa and has two children, Mary Claire, born August 2005 and Finley, born July 2007.

Ashley W. Harris, BA’95 and David A Harris, JD’03, announce the birth of their son, Samuel Ellison, Oct. 28, 2008, Fayetteville.

Monica Jones, BA’95, MS’99, Fayetteville, is assistant academic counselor to the Razorbacks.

Cassie Elliott, BA’96, Gentry, received the Certified Commercial Investment Member designation by the CCIM Institute.

Elizabeth Galloway Moore, BA’96 and Scott Oliver Shackelford, MA’06, were married Nov. 15, 2008, and reside in Fayetteville.

Cinnamon Catlin-Legutko, MA’97, Indianapolis, IN, is museum director of the General Lew Wallace Study and Museum, which received the National Medal for Museum and Library Service.

Thom Satterlee, MFA’98, Marion, IN, was awarded a National Endowment of the Arts Fellowship in Poetry.

Mary Claire Butt and Andrew Justin York, BA’99, were married Dec. 13, 2008, and reside in Washington, D.C.

T. J. Holmes, BA’99, Mableton, GA, was appointed to the Board of Advisors for the University of Arkansas.

Heather Marie Wells, BA’99, MA’01, received the Emerging Museum Professional Award from the Southeastern Museums Conference.

2000s

Lauren Elizabeth Bennett and David Justin Embree, BA’01, were married Nov. 15, 2008, and reside in Fayetteville.

Sarah Gheen, MS’01, Fayetteville, received the 2008 Gold Branch Award by the Association for Play Therapy.

Jenny Leigh Prince, BA’00, completed a master’s of science degree in occupational safety management at The University of Central Missouri in December 2008. She is currently employeed by The Shaw Group and is working on a land reclamation project in St. Louis, MO.

Eba Rousey, BA’01, Bentonville, was dubbed a Hero De Corazon by the League of United Latin American Citizens, LULAC Council 761.

Amanda Arnold, BSE’02, BA’07, Fayetteville, was promoted to marketing director of The Bank of Fayetteville.

Julie Marie Harris, BA’02, BSN’05 and Benjamin Yielding were married March 8, 2008, and reside in Fayetteville.

Kate Coleman, BS’03, MS’06, Bentonville, had an article accepted to the European journal Planetary and Space Sciences.

Drew Allen, BA’04, is the primary research and evaluation analyst for the College Now program, New York City public schools’ primary college readiness program. College Now enlists all 17 colleges in the City University of New York system and nearly 300 NYC public high schools.

Marlena Sarah Sweeney, BSBA’04, MA’07 and Michael Richard Bond were married Aug. 23, 2008, and reside in Springdale.

Cassandra Ann Fincher, BSE’06 and Jonathan Dwight Watts, BA’04, MSW’08, were married July 26, 2008, and reside in Centerton.

Ami Rochelle, MS’06, Webster, TX, is head athletic trainer for the La Marque Independent School District.

Maya Siddhanta Sloan, MFA’06 and Nathan Warren Lane, BA’02, were married Oct. 11, 2008, and reside in Hollywood, CA.

Joselin Niemyer, BS’08, is attending medical school at UAMS. She is active in the Young Democrats of Arkansas and the National Medical Women’s Association.
