Intentional Wandering Action Steps

Explore, Practice, Connect

Curiosity is the key to making the most of your college experience.  Intentional wandering within your career community provides focus and purpose to your collective experiences.  Explore, Practice and Connect in everything that you do.

Conduct informational interviews with people who have worked within the industry. Meet these professionals online, in the community, on campus, and through people you already know. It will be important for you to have a social media presence.  Develop a LinkedIn profile, connect with professionals and alumni who are working in this area, and engage with them by sharing articles that could be helpful to them. Take advantage of the expertise found on campus, as well, by engaging with faculty and staff who are familiar with this industry.
Practice your communication, marketing and social media skills outside of the classroom.  In addition to an internship and work experience, find at least one experiential learning opportunity, such as study abroad, volunteering, service learning projects, or substantial research projects.
This program, offered by the U of A Career Development Center, will help you fully prepare for your career by walking you through the process of career and personal exploration.  You’ll learn resume and interview preparation and how to engage with professionals in your field.
Explore your career options by reviewing job descriptions and graduate program emphases early.  Prepare by compiling a list of organizations and/or schools of interest, create a marketable resume and writing sample portfolio, practice interviewing, and engage with professionals within this career community. Plan on starting the process of choosing full-time positions and applying during your senior year.  Similarly, if you have chosen to go to graduate school first, you will begin applying for those programs at the very beginning of your senior year.
Find an internship related to this career community and/or work experience either part-time or during the summer. Many competitive agencies in this field will require for you to have at least one internship experience before consideration. Explore and engage with organizations that specifically recruit UA students through campus resources (online, through faculty, and during career fairs).
If there is a student organization or student-run media group directly related to your future career, join it.  Also, consider holding a student organization leadership role in which you are practicing communication, marketing and social media strategies and further developing your portfolio of work examples and accomplishments.
