Sturgis International Fellows

Qualifications at the Time of Application

  • Be a current degree-seeking graduate or undergraduate student in Fulbright College.
  • Have a record of high academic achievement and outstanding leadership.
  • Undergraduate students must be:
    • A full-time student with a declared major in Fulbright College
    • A rising junior or rising senior in the Fulbright College Honors Program
    • Pursuing a career with international emphasis
    • Graduate students must be:
      • A full-time graduate student at the time of application with a declared degree area anchored in Fulbright College


  • Intended to support longer-term study of a semester or more (at least four continuous months outside of the U.S.)
  • Up to ten Sturgis International Fellowships are available each year
  • Funding shall pay for expenses that may include, but not be limited to:
    • Tuition and/or fees to the University of Arkansas.
    • Fees associated with preparing for international travel such as obtaining a passport or immunizations.
    • Tuition and/or fees to an international host institution, organization, or family.
    • Expenses associated with the international travel assignment including transportation, housing, and personal expenses abroad.
    • Expenses associated with an internship or research project including foreign or domestic travel, destination housing, and personal expenses.
    • Any equipment approved in the budget becomes the property of the University of Arkansas


The application deadline is Friday, March 1, 2019:

  • By Friday, March 1, at 4:00 p.m., submit the following materials in both hard copy and PDF form to Old Main 517 (for travel beginning between July 1 and December 31), Submit:
    • Application Cover Page
    • Résumé, not to exceed two pages
    • Current University of Arkansas transcript
    • Two essays:
      • A project proposal not to exceed 1000 words
      • A personal statement not to exceed 500 words
    • Two faculty letters of recommendation
    • Support letter from host organization or school
    • A preliminary budget for the project proposal
      • Enrollment of at least 1 credit hour per term for duration of project
      • $200 Study Abroad Service Fee
      • Overseas health insurance and emergency travel assistance
      • Passport & visa costs
  • By Tuesday April 2, winning fellows will be selected and notified. Finalists and fellows are chosen by the selection committee. Winners will be asked to accept the award and submit a final budget by Friday, April 26, 2019.

Final applications must be submitted in both hard-copy and digital format. Hard copies should be delivered to the Fulbright Honors office 517 MAIN. All digital files should be compiled into a single PDF copy and sent to Mary Ellen Hartford  Students will not have possession of their letters of recommendation; please ask faculty members to send their letters of recommendation directly to Mary Ellen Hartford.
