Marty Maxwell Lane is a graphic design educator, maker, researcher and writer. Her research focuses on design that facilitates learning and empowerment through investigations pertaining to design pedagogy, collaboration, and participatory design. She is currently an Associate Professor of Graphic Design in the School of Art at the University of Arkansas, where she also serves as Associate Director of the School. Her forthcoming book, Collaboration in Design Education will be published in 2020 by Bloomsbury. As a long time AIGA member, Marty has served on numerous boards, including the Director of Education for the Kansas City chapter and Co-Chair of the national AIGA Design Educators Steering Committee. She currently serves as an advisor for the Northwest Arkansas Chapter and on the AIGA National Board. Marty also serves on the board of directors for the design on-profit, Thrive, in Helena, Arkansas. As a mother of two young kids, Marty aims to be a mentor and supporter for other new moms navigating the world of tenure.
Marty currently teaches Graphic Design in the School of Art at the University of Arkansas, where she worked with her design colleagues to establish the first BFA in Graphic Design at the school. Marty teaches in all areas of design, ranging from introductory to advanced, print to digital, but specializes in teaching typography, participatory design and speculative technology. Along with her graphic design colleagues, she is working to create a Masters of Design program slated to launch in Fall of 2022.
Courses taught at The University of Arkansas include: Introduction to Typography, Typographic Systems, Professional Development, Human-Centered Design, and Design For Good.

Prior to joining the University of Arkansas in the Fall of 2014, Marty taught at The Kansas City Art Institute (2010–2014) and Kent State University (2009–2010). Marty received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design (honors) from the University of Illinois-Chicago and a Master of Graphic Design from North Carolina State University’s College of Design. Before returning to school to obtain her Masters degree, Marty worked professionally as a designer in Chicago, where her work was recognized by AIGA, The Type Director’s Club and Print’s Regional Design Annual.
