The art education program offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with K-12 Arkansas state teacher certification and is accredited by the Arkansas Department of Education and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

Overview

The Bachelor of Fine Arts with a Concentration in Art Education is a professional arts degree consisting of 120 hours with the option of K-12 Arkansas teacher certification.

The BFA in Art degree program offers a Concentration in Art Education and is accredited by the Arkansas Department of Education and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. It prepares future K-12 art teachers to understand and apply current art education theory to practice, including contemporary concepts and applications for teaching art in an inclusive and global world. The program content is in compliance with Arkansas State Frameworks, the National Art Education Association, and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. In addition to and after completion of the program, for K-12 Arkansas teacher certification, the student must complete an additional 12 hours of Student Teaching in Art and Arkansas certification requirements.

 In addition to the B.F.A. Degree in Art with a concentration in Art Education, for certification to teach K-12 art, the student must complete an additional 12 hours of Student Teaching in Art (ARED 476V), take the Praxis II exams, and complete online professional development (concurrent with enrollment in ARED 476V).

Specific Requirements

The Art Education program requires 36-37 hours of general education, a minimum of 63 hours of studio and art history/criticism, 21 hours of professional education coursework and 12 hours (one semester) of supervised student teaching for certification. Provisional art teacher certification in the state of Arkansas also requires students to pass the Praxis I and Praxis II exams.
