Hershel was born in Alamogordo, NM, and grew up around the country with stops in Ohio Colorado, Texas and Missouri. 

Hershel has studied, Vocal & Instumental Music, Theater, Youth Ministry/ Christian Formation and Human Resource Workforce Development. He is married to Mary Ellen Hartford and they have six children, Emily Heard, Rhiannon Strick, Jasmine Cloud, Malyssa Semcken, James Fry, and Gracie Hartford, and seven grandchildren. .

Hershel has been with the Department of Communication for almost 10 years, and had been Episcopal Campus Chaplain at St. Martin's University Center before that. He has additional experience in parish ministry, camps management & programming as well as experience in radio broadcasting and management. He enjoys working with students here at the University having served as an advisor for Alpha Phi Omega, Mortar Board Society and Gamma Beta Phi. In his spare time he enjoys photography, music, travel, and exploring technology.
