Academic Interests Cartography
In 1981, Dr. Smith came to the University of Arkansas from Michigan State University, where he served as Director of the Center for Cartographic Research and Spatial Analysis.  At UA, he developed and taught courses in cartographic design and computer mapping.  In 1989, he authored the Electronic Atlas of Arkansas, the first atlas of any kind to be distributed on electronic media.  Shortly thereafter, he left UA to co-found and serve as President of Electromap, a company that produced a variety of computer-based atlases for the consumer market.  Electromap was sold in 1995, and Dr. Smith returned to UA until his retirement in 2000.  He and his wife, Joan, now reside in Boulder, Colorado.  He enjoys fly-fishing and backpacking, and is attempting to complete the 500-mile Colorado Trail, at a rate of about 50 miles each summer.
