He held senior research positions at Peterhouse, Cambridge University (England), the Research Institute for Humanistic Studies, Kyôto University (Japan), the Department of Chinese Studies, Julius-Maximilians Universität Würzburg (Germany), and was Lecturer in Ethnomusicology in the Department of Social Anthropology at The Queen's University of Belfast (Ireland), Chair and Professor Ordinarius of Ethnomusicology and Systematic Musicology at the University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands), before joining the University of Arkansas in 2000.
Dr. Wolpert conducts field- and archive-work in China, Japan, and Europe.
