Alex J. Marino is a PhD Candidate in History under the supervisor of Dr. Randall Woods. His dissertation project, “The United States and the Angolan Revolution: Southern Segregation, Black Nationalism, and the Cold War in Africa” focuses on the American involvement in decolonization in Angola, the former jewel of the Portuguese Empire in Africa, from World War II to 1976. He argues that the space race and domestic political pressures from the right and left constrained and weakened the ability of American presidents to wage Cold War in Southern Africa, leading to the disastrous 1975 CIA intervention in Angola. Marino’s expected completion date is August 2019.
