Baris Basturk is a PhD student specializing in Ottoman History. He is interested in the intellectual and cultural history of the late Medieval and Early Modern periods. More specifically, he is interested in Ottoman thought, historians, society, cosmology, culture, popular religion and mysticism. He hopes to trace how early Islamic and Persianate concepts and ideas permeated through Ottoman thought. Similarly, how Ottomans reflected on the past, the wider world and who they were. In his Master's thesis, he examined Katip Celebi, an Ottoman intellectual of 17th century and how he reflected on the debates of his age, on the politics, society, law of the age.
