About the Department

The Department of Mathematical Sciences is committed to excellence in teaching, research and service to the State of Arkansas.   At the undergraduate level, we offer a flexible B.A. and B.S. degree, the latter degree program with the choice of tracks in pure mathematics, applied mathematics, or statistics.  At the graduate level, we offer an M.S. and Ph.D. degree in mathematics.   The mathematics minor is also an attractive option for many undergraduate students majoring in a different field.   The department also participates in the interdisciplinary master’s program in Statistics and Analytics (STAN) program.

Mathematics is a unique subject with a fascinating history.  Its scope is ubiquitous in science and the subject continues to play a larger role in our society as it is applied to more disciplines and used in more commercial settings.  Our programs prepare students for a variety of different career goals, including industry, education, as well as preparation for further graduate study.

The department faculty represent a broad cross-section of mathematical areas, conducting active research in complex analysis, harmonic and functional analysis, partial differential equations, geometric and low-dimensional topology, commutative algebra and algebraic geometry, applied mathematics and statistics, and mathematics education.

The department supports a student-friendly atmosphere, with close interaction between students and faculty, and math-oriented student organizations such as the Math Club and Arkansas Women in Statistics and Mathematics (AWSM).
