Music Major Auditions
Winds, Brass, Percussion
Step 1: Apply for Admission to the Department of Music
Students may start their application for admission to the Department of Music prior to being admitted to the University of Arkansas. However, acceptance as a degree seeking music major is contingent upon admission to the University of Arkansas. Apply to the Department of Music at this link.
Step 2 : Register for an Audition Date
Woodwind and Brass students should be prepared to perform two excerpts of contrasting styles that best represent the student’s highest technical and musical achievement. Students should also be prepared to perform chromatic and all major scales from memory, and sight-reading. Registration will be followed by an informational meeting with music department faculty. Students will then be dismissed to warm up for their audition.
Percussion students should be prepared to play two separate auditions. The preliminary audition will take place during the scheduled music major audition dates. For the preliminary audition students should prepare either their All-State or All-District audition material or appropriate solo literature that will showcase their technical and musical skills. Out of state students may audition via video (DVD or private YouTube video) although a live audition is preferred.
The Preliminary Audition will consist of scales, rudiments and sight-reading, and prepared solos on all of the following instruments: Concert Snare Drum, Marimba (four mallet solos encouraged but not required), and Timpani.
The Second Round Audition will be held on the University of Arkansas Campus in Fayetteville. Following the Preliminary Audition students will receive information regarding how to access the audition materials for the Second Round Audition from the band’s web site.
