From the Chair

The Department of Sociology and Criminology is a very dynamic, productive, friendly, and student success-oriented unit in Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. The department has an interdisciplinary structure built around a Sociology Major, Criminology Major, and Master’s Program. The department also offers a very popular double major in Sociology and Criminology, and two minors: in Criminal Justice and Sociology. Our fully online minor in Criminal Justice counts toward the Interdisciplinary Major. We participate in and contribute to African and African American Studies, Latin American & Latino Studies, Gender Studies, and Religious Studies, and other interdisciplinary area studies programs.

Our popular and valuable majors, with over 400 undergraduate students, and over 100 double majors, prepare students for meaningful and rewarding careers in a variety of fields including non-profit and government agencies, community organizations, public relations, law and law enforcement, data analysis, market research, security, social services, guidance and counseling, education, foreign service, and public administration, among others. Our graduates have been working as counselors, social science researchers and analysts, victim advocates, criminal justice professionals, court case managers, social media analysts, public health coordinators, HR coordinators, community outreach specialists.

The department excels in published and funded research, teaching, and community outreach/engagement. Our students have access to three successful research centers where they can engage in research and/or gain valuable internship experiences: the Center for Social Research (CSR), the Community and Family Institute (CFI), and the Terrorism Research Center (TRC).

We offer robust undergraduate internship opportunities that help sociology and criminology students develop a better understanding of a prospective career and determine whether their interests match a chosen career path, while simultaneously gaining experience with professionals in the field. We collaborate with Employer Relations office in Fulbright College, emphasizing how our majors are related to various Fulbright Career Communities

Please explore our departmental homepage, including the information about our student organizations and honors opportunities. Please do contact us if you need any additional information. We look forward to having you among our students.
