DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE ANNOUNCES 2022-2023 SEASON FEATURING GRADUATE  M.F.A. STUDENTS

The Department of Theatre’s 2022-23 Subscription Season will feature four plays, all written or directed by M.F.A. Graduate candidates in fulfillment of their M.F.A. theses. The season includes classic, contemporary, and new plays, as well as a faculty directed musical, that celebrate the diverse perspectives of our students as they explore timely issues and timeless themes. Michael Riha, Professor and Chair, says “Our students have patiently waited out this pandemic while honing their skills on a number of unique projects—this includes the entire cohort, actors, designers, playwrights, and directors. However, they are extremely excited to be producing live theatre for our Northwest Arkansas and U of A campus community audience members."

OPEN AUDITION CALL FOR ALL CURRENT UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS STUDENTS

A Midsummer Night's Dream is a favorite comedy by Shakespeare that is all about Love: The wild, irrational things we do, the magical way we feel, the obstacles of jealousy, possessiveness, competition, the approval or disapproval of families and society. In this play, true love prevails. 

There are 3 main plots: The Lovers, the "Mechanicals" and the Fairies! When these three worlds entangle in the forest on a Midsummer’s night, chaos and comedy ensue!

 

22 Speaking Roles:

 

At the Court of Athens

Theseus, Duke of Athens

Hippoyta, Queen of the Amazons

Philostrate, master of the revels to Theseus

Ageus, father to Hermia

 

The Lovers

Hermia, in love with Lysander, small and mighty

Lysander, in love with Hermia, sincere and brave

Helena, in love with Demetrius, tall and determined

Demetrius, can’t make up his mind, fickle but handsome.

 

The Mechanicals (laborers who meet to put on a play!)

Peter Quince, carpenter, writer, tactful

Nick Bottom, weaver, attention-seeker and would be King of the World!

Francis Flute, bellows-mender, a romantic

Tom Snout, tinker, rough around the edges

Robin Starveling, tailor, nay-sayer, worrier

Snug, joiner (works in construction), a gentle lion, not too quick

 

The Fairy Kingdom

Oberon, King of the Fairies, powerful, strong-willed

Titania, Queen of the Fairies, powerful, loving and loyal

Robin Goodfellow (Puck), spritely and playful but, not “nice” Loyal to Oberon

First Fairy – Dutiful, protective of Titania

Peasblossom, Cobweb, Moth and Mustardseed – fairies in Titania’s train

 

2-4 non-speaking roles will be cast.

There is potential for up to 4 speaking roles to be cast by Faculty Guest Actors!

*All roles are open to actors of all gender identities and ethnicities.  (The Fairyland, in particular is a vibrant, magical and gender-fluid world!)

 

This is an Undergrad project with Faculty Designers: Shawn Irish (Lighting), Helene Siebrits (Costumes), and Kim Powers (Scenic); Kate Frank Directs.

It's about one moment. It's about hitting the wall and having to make a choice... or take a stand... or turn around and go back. These are the stories and characters of today, the Songs for a New World. The first musical from Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown (Parade, Bridges of Madison County), this moving collection of powerful songs examines life, love and the choices that we make.

The 2022-2023 Student Spotlight Series

In addition to these subscription offerings additional work will be showcased in our Student Spotlight Series, which features student driven projects and work coming out of our classroom labs. These typically include an exciting mix of ten-minute plays, late night cabarets, studio shows, and one-person shows—come find out what our students are cooking up! Free Student Tickets

All University of Arkansas students are eligible for FREE or discounted tickets to Dept of Theatre productions. Please note that if you are seeing a production to fulfill a THTR class requirement, you MUST reserve your ticket using the code provided by your instructor in order to ensure you receive credit for attending the show. 

All Theatre Majors can see each show at no charge.  This single ticket is NOT transferable to someone else if you are involved with or otherwise unable to see a show. Tickets for majors must be reserved online using the appropriate promo code. If you do not know this code, please email tickets@uark.edu to request it. To reserve these tickets, complete the following steps.

  1. Click the TICKETS button on the far left side of the page.

  2. Select the production title.

  3. Enter number of tickets (limit 1) and choose performance date.

  4. Enter the Promo Code into the prompt on the right.  

    Note: This must be done BEFORE leaving this screen.

  5. Select Delivery Method (Print at Home or Box Office Will Call).

  6. Select correct discount (ticket price) and add tickets to Cart.

  7. Choose to LOG IN, CREATE ACCOUNT, or SKIP LOGIN AND PROCEED TO CHECKOUT (located underneath the Log In option).

  8. Enter contact information, check box agreeing to Terms & Conditions, and click FINALIZE ORDER.

Students who are enrolled in a qualifying Theatre class will be given a promotional code in order to reserve two free tickets to each Department of Theatre production. This includes both Mainstage and Second Stage productions. Class tickets must be reserved online using the promo code given to each class. If you do not know your code, please contact your instructor. To reserve these tickets, complete the following steps.

  2. Select the production title.

  3. Enter number of tickets (limit 2) and choose performance date.

Tickets for all students are $5 each for weekend performance (Friday, Saturday, Sunday).  $5 student tickets may be purchased by the TICKETS button on the far left side of the page, or at the box office 90 minutes before the performance. This includes U of A students, students at other area colleges, and children under 18.

In addition, U of A students also get FREE tickets for Wednesday and Thursday performances.  Please note that students must reserve FREE tickets by emailing tickets@uark.edu. These cannot be reserved online. Emails should include name, student ID number, performance date, and whether they want one or two tickets.
