Shawn Irish is currently the head of Lighting Design in the MFA program at the University of Arkansas. He teaches Stage Lighting Design, Introduction to Theatrical Design and Theatre Appreciation for undergraduates and mentors and teaches MFA candidates in Lighting Design. Previously, Professor Irish has taught courses in Projection Design, Scenic Design, Computer Aided Drafting, Rendering and Scene Painting and Theatre History.

Professor Irish also maintains his professional career as a freelance Scenic and Lighting Designer. He is a frequent collaborator with Northwest Arkansas’ Professional Regional theatre, TheatreSquared and has designed numerous productions including Hamlet, 4000 Miles, The Spiritualist, The Fall of The House, The 39 Steps, Boeing Boeing, The Complete Works of Shakespeare (Abriged), The Mystery of Irma Vep and My Father’s War. Other recent credits include A Streetcar Named Desire, Little Women, House and Garden, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, The Great American Trailer Park Musical, Moonlight and Magnolias and I Love You Because for Playhouse Tulsa, The Music Man and The Man Who Came to Dinner at The Arrowrock Lyceum and The Price at Vermont’s Northern Stage. He also assistant designed Les MiserablesThe Pajama Game and Hello, Dolly! at The Muny in St. Louis.

He has been awarded Outstanding Scenic Design 3 times by the Kennedy Center American Theatre Festival for his productions of Rabbit Hole, A Doll’s House and Ipgigenia 2.0. His award winning Lighting Design for Big Love was featured in Theatre Design and Technology and American Theatre Magazines as well as the Prague Quadrennial.

Irish has recently been appointed to lead the Theatre in Britain Study Abroad program and hopes to carry on in the great tradition set down by U of A Professors Mavourneen Dwyer and Joe Candido.
