Course Requirements

Specific course requirements for different medical schools are similar, but may vary from school to school. UAMS accepts AP credit for prematriculation requirements, while some schools do not. The specific requirements for the UAMS College Medicine can be found by consulting the “Guide for Applicants” in the UAMS College of Medicine catalog. It is wise to check with your premedical advisor and individual medical school admissions websites for the courses required by specific schools.

For UAMS the following courses must be completed prior to matriculation:

  • 2 SEMESTERS of BIOLOGY
  • 3 SEMESTERS of CHEMISTRY (to include Organic Chemistry with lab and Biochemistry)
  • 1 SEMESTER of GENETICS
  • 2 SEMESTERS of PHYSICS (College Physics I & II or University Physics I & II)
  • 2 SEMESTERS of ENGLISH
  • 1 SEMESTER of STATISTICS
  • 2 SEMESTERS of SOCIAL SCIENCE (Psychology and Sociology are strongly recommended)

Courses recommended for the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT)

Regardless of major, students are recommended to take the following courses in order to be fully prepared for the MCAT.

  • Cell Biology
  • General Genetics
  • General Microbiology
  • Human Physiology
  • General Chemistry I – II
  • Organic Chemistry I – II
  • Biochemistry
  • Statistics
  • Psychology
  • Sociology


Other courses that are beneficial for the MCAT

  • Philosophy (Ethics, Introduction to Philosophy, or Logic)
  • Upper level Psychology or Sociology
