Professionals working in Social Impact & Sustainability careers are often in roles that allow them to solve social problems, advocate for others, develop relationships with people, and improve the community. A key skill for this career community is to understand the human condition from multiple perspectives and disciplines in order to improve the quality of life for individuals or groups of individuals.

Explore, Practice, ConnectCuriosity is the key to making the most of your college experience.  Intentional wandering within your career community provides focus and purpose to your collective experiences.  Explore, Practice and Connect in everything that you do.

 

Participate in volunteer experiences and/or internships related to the particular service area for which you have the most passion and energy. During this experience learn all that you can about the issue, develop relationships with professionals who work within the service area, and gain experience advocating for the people or the community of interest. Other ways to engage within your service area are through service learning classes, qualitative and quantitative research studies, and away experiences (i.e. study abroad, mission trips, etc).
Join active service-oriented student organizations of interest in order to build leadership, organizational and promotional skills.  Utilize your time with the student organization to familiarize yourself with the policies governing RSOs and developing connections in the community that are related to your interest area.  Prepare for your career by tracking and articulating accomplishments made within the student organization. For information regarding Student Activism in college look at making a difference on and off campus.
This program, offered by the UA Career Development Center, will help you fully prepare for your career by walking you through the process of career and personal exploration.  You’ll learn resume and interview preparation and how to engage with professionals in your field.
Explore your career options by reviewing job descriptions and graduate program emphases early.  Prepare by compiling a list of companies of interest, create a marketable resume, practice interviewing, and talk with professionals within this career community. If you plan to apply to service organizations, it is common to learn about open positions through current employees and/or board members. Therefore, having a network within a service area is crucial. If you're interested in working for a national government office, be ready to apply as soon as they are posted, as postings on usajobs.gov often close after the first 100 applicants. Moving through the application process for other governmental entities will often take several months. If you have chosen to go to graduate school first, you will begin applying for those programs at the very beginning of your senior year. Every graduate program has different timelines, so check those to which you're most interested in applying.
