Choosing a Major
One of the most frequently asked questions by premedical students is "What is the best major for medical school?". With respect to medical school acceptance, there is no best major. As an applicant, you must fulfill the minimum requirements specified by the individual medical schools, prepare for and perform well on the MCAT, have a strong record of volunteering and health profession experience, and otherwise present a strong application. The choice of major should be based on what you enjoy learning about. The majority of medical school applicants are biology majors, and it is important that an applicant knows and likes biology, but there is no evidence to suggest that any particular major provides a strategic advantage.
The best choice of a major is an area of study that interests you and that you will do well in. It is not necessary to immediately decide on a major as a first-year student unless you intend to enroll in the College of Engineering, which has a more structured program. Taking your first year to explore your options may benefit you.
