The mission of the Inspirational Chorale is to keep the black sacred music tradition alive. The ensemble provides a forum where university students, regardless of ethnicity, can perform the various genres of the tradition. The Inspirational Chorale – as an integrated part of the music department, the academic community, and the community at large – has enjoyed an illustrious reputation while performing for dignitaries and heads of state. The ensemble has made appearances at national and international conferences and has taken international tours to Beijing, China, and Kilkenny, Ireland.

Fall 2017 Audition Information
The Inspirational Chorale exists in two (2) sections. Section One (Inspirational Chorale) is an auditioned ensemble of 32 voices that meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:30 to 3:50 PM. This ensemble performs a wide range of repertoire, including Gospel music, Spirituals and Sacred Music from the traditional classical choral repertoire. Section Two (Inspirational Singers) performs primarily Gospel Music and Spirituals. An audition is not required for section two. Simply sign up on UAConnect.
Auditions for Inspirational Chorale are approximately 10 minutes long with Dr. Murdock. In preparation for the audition, students are expected to prepare the following:
Prepared Piece: Students should learn their part of Handel's "Sing Unto God." The piece should be learned independently and may be performed using sheet music. An accompaniment track will be played during the audition.
Sight-reading: Students will expected to sight-read a single line of sheet music with accuracy and musicality.
Aural skills: Students will be expected to listen to an excerpt of Gospel or Popular music, extract their part and sing it back.
Pitch Matching: Students may be required to complete a series of pitch matching exercises, as determined by the conductor.
Returning members of the Chorale will audition on August 18 and 19. New students will audition on August 21 and 22. Sign-up sheets will be posted on the bulletin board outside of MUSC 335 the week prior to the start of the semester. If you have questions, please contact Dr. Murdock at (479) 575-5760.
