Matthew W. Mihalka
Musicology and Ethnomusicology

Matthew Mihalka joined the Music Department at the University of Arkansas in 2011. His research addresses the use of music in 20th/21st century American society, particularly during sporting events. He holds a PhD in Musicology/Ethnomusicology from the University of Minnesota, where his dissertation, "From the Hammond Organ to 'Sweet Caroline': The Historical Evolution of Baseball's Sonic Environment," was the recepient of a Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship.
His current projects include the book From Town Hall to Play Ball: The History of the Baseball Organ and an article on "Sweet Caroline," the Boston Red Sox, and the Boston Marathon bombings. His work has been published in The American Organist, Notes, American History through American Sports, and Music in the Social and Behavioral Sciences. He is also a co-editor of Music around the World: A Global Encyclopedia, a four-volume music reference work scheduled for publication in 2018.
