Premedical Advisory Committee

The Premedical Advisory Committee (PMAC) evaluates all applicants from the University of Arkansas to any medical school

The PMAC is composed of approximately 15 faculty members from various departments. The composition may change slightly from year to year, but many members have had years of experience serving on the committee.

Committee letters are mandatory for UAMS and many other medical schools

Medical schools typically require a composite letter of recommendation, or "committee letter", for each applicant for medical school from that institution.  For example, this letter is required of undergraduates, non-traditional students, and graduate students applying to UAMS from the institution they have attended within the last 2 years.

The UAMS College of Medicine Catalog states this under the section "For the Medical School Applicant":

Premedical Advisory Committee Composite Evaluation: (Mandatory) If it has been two years or less since an applicant last attended or graduated from college, he/she must request a letter of evaluation from the school's Premedical Advisory Committee. It is the responsibility of the applicant to investigate and determine if his/her school has a Premedical Advisory Committee. The applicant must meet all established deadlines of that committee for requesting a letter be sent to the College of Medicine Office of Admissions. Applicants who fail to satisfy this prematriculation requirement will not be allowed to proceed with their application. Therefore, their application will be rejected.

The PMAC evaluates application materials and interviews all applicants

For each applicant requesting a letter of evaluation, the committee considers the academic record, personal letters of recommendation, character and motivation, interpersonal skills, leadership, extenuating circumstances regarding any negative factor in the application, and other information available to committee members. These factors will be evaluated based on application materials, and on an interview each candidate will have with two members of the PMAC on campus.

Two copies of personal letters of recommendation are required

Individuals writing personal letters of recommendation must upload one copy to the appropriate letter service (AMCAS, AACOMAS, TMDSAS), and email a copy to mivey@uark.edu or mail to:
